ANZAC Day for Casual Teachers

ANZAC Day, a significant day in Australia and New Zealand, is often commemorated through various activities in schools. As a casual teacher, you can plan engaging and respectful activities to help students understand the importance of ANZAC Day.

Remember to approach these activities with sensitivity and respect for the solemnity of ANZAC Day. Ensure that any discussions or materials are age-appropriate and that students understand the historical context and significance of the day.

1 Assembly

Organise or participate in an assembly where students can learn about the history and significance of ANZAC Day through presentations, speeches, poems, or songs.

2 Art and Craft

Encourage students to create ANZAC-themed artwork or craft, such as poppy crafts, soldiers' silhouette art, or a class mural depicting scenes from World War I.

3 Reading

Select age-appropriate books or articles about ANZAC Day and read them aloud to the class. Discuss the stories and their significance.

4 Writing Activities

Have students write letters or poems expressing gratitude to veterans or reflecting on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women. They can also write fictional stories set during World War I.

5 Film Screening

Show educational documentaries or films related to ANZAC Day and World War I. Ensure the content is suitable for the age of your students.

6 Reflection

Lead a moment of silence to honor and remember the fallen soldiers. Encourage students to reflect quietly on the significance of ANZAC Day and what it means to them.

7 Discussion

Facilitate a discussion about the values of courage, sacrifice, and mateship exemplified by the ANZACs. Encourage students to share their thoughts and feelings about these values.

8 Collaborative Projects

Initiate a collaborative project where students work together to create a display or presentation showcasing their understanding of ANZAC Day. This could include posters, digital presentations, or multimedia projects.

9 Fundraising

Organise a fundraising activity to support veterans or organizations that assist them. This could be a bake sale, a coin drive, or selling handmade poppies.

10 Guest Speaker

If possible, invite a veteran or someone with a connection to the military to speak to the class about their experiences. Hearing first hand accounts can be incredibly impactful for students.

Some activities may be difficult if you are only at the school for the day but it's great to have some ideas just in case and get involved in whatever activities the school has in place.
