Book Week 2024

Book Week is a wonderful opportunity for casual teachers to engage students in the joy of reading and storytelling.

This year's theme is 'Reading is Magic' and will be celebrated from 17th-23rd August. Here are some creative and educational ideas to celebrate Book Week 2024.

1 Dress-Up Day

Theme-Based Costumes: Coordinate with the school’s Book Week theme and dress up as a character from a popular book. Encourage students to come dressed as their favourite book characters too.

2 Storytelling Sessions

Interactive Read-Alouds: Choose engaging books related to the Book Week theme and read aloud to students. Use expressive voices and encourage participation by asking questions about the story.

Book Cover Redesign: Have students redesign the covers of their favourite books or create new covers for imaginary books based on the theme.

Character Profiles: Ask students to create profiles or posters about their favourite book characters, including their traits, motivations, and actions.

4 Classroom Decorations

Book Displays: Create themed displays in the classroom featuring books related to the Book Week theme. Include student recommendations and reviews to encourage peer recommendations.

Bookmarks: Help students design and decorate their own bookmarks featuring quotes or characters from their favourite books.

5 Writing and Art Projects

Book Reviews: Have students write short reviews or summaries of their favourite books. Display these reviews around the classroom or in a dedicated Book Week display area.

Illustration Stations: Set up art stations where students can illustrate scenes from their favourite books or create their own storybooks.

6 Author Study

Virtual Author Visits: Arrange virtual visits or video readings from authors whose books are being celebrated during Book Week. Discuss the author’s inspiration and writing process with the students.

7 Book Week Parade or Showcase

Character Parade: Organise a parade where students can showcase their costumes and share brief descriptions of the characters they are dressed as.

Book Fair: Collaborate with the school library or local bookstore to set up a Book Fair showcasing a variety of books related to the Book Week theme for students to explore and potentially purchase.

Additional Tips:

Plan Ahead: Familiarise yourself with the school’s Book Week theme and schedule. Coordinate with other teachers and the school librarian to ensure activities are cohesive and well-planned.
Engage Parents: Invite parents to participate in Book Week activities, such as attending storytelling sessions or volunteering to assist with themed crafts.
Celebrate Diversity: Select books that represent diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences to promote inclusivity and broaden students’ understanding of the world.

By incorporating these ideas, casual teachers can foster a love for reading and make Book Week 2024 a memorable and enriching experience for students.
